The Pomegranates show review at the Monolith Music Festival, September 14, 2008 at 2:00pm

Hello again!
The second day of the Monolith Music Festival had gotten off to a great start with sets by The Elms, Jukebox the Ghost and Astra Moveo, so I was already pretty pumped by the time the Pomegranates from Cincinnati, OH took the WOXY.com Stage. Another band I was not overly familar with before the festival, I liked what I heard online and wanted to catch their set. I’m really glad I did!
The Pomegranates were one of the special discoveries for the Dust Devil this weekend. This was a great set and this is a great band. Everything is Alive is the title of their debut full-length disc, and is chock full of some fabulous music. Get it. Now. Seriously.
Now a five-piece, which adds some serious muscle to the music, the Pomegranates play experimental, shoegazer-inspired indie pop music. The musicianship is very impressive considering the band has only existed for a couple of years now. The guitar work of this band blew me away. I love to hear guitars that simply shimmer, and this band uses that formula extremely well. I liken the guitar work to one of my favorite bands from the nineties, Kitchens of Distinction. If you were a fan of that great band, the Pomegranates are definitely a band you need to check out.
The vocal delivery was top-notch and I am always a fan of any band with multiple lead vocalists that possess different styles. At timesĀ I was reminded of the Three O’Clock in regards to the vocals, a great Paisley underground band from the eighties.
Folks, this quite simply was one of the highlights of the weekend for me. The best thing about a festival like this is the opportunity to discover new, underground bands that are so much better than what mainstream radio provides. The Pomegranates are a fabulous band, and you would be well served to get their disc and see them when they come to your neck of the woods.
I have to say, they are some of the nicest guys you will meet as well! I had a chance to briefly talk with some of the members after the Band of Horses set later in the evening and they are genuine guys. We talked about music influences and styles, and any band that proclaims to be fans of Sonic Youth know what they are doing!
Holy cow, I could have easily ended the day at this point and been satisfied, but we weren’t even halfway through yet. More to come!
Cheers!
