The Fratellis show review at the Monolith Music Festival, September 13, 2008 at 5:45pm

Hello friends,

WOW! What a set and what a band! The Fratellis are out of Glasgow, Scotland. I had a bit of knowledge of this band before the Monolith Music Festival, so I was looking forward to seeing them.

The Fratellis strode out on the Esurance Main Stage looking pretty confident in themselves, and it did not take long to see why. “Pop music” from overseas has a definite different type of flair than pop music in the States. Here that term is a horrible knock against the artist. European countries have a different take on what good pop music is, and the Fratellis practice the formula well.

Employing a basic guitar attack, the Fratellis take the pop sensibilty of a band like Oasis, but crank up the intensity and the fun. This truly was an enjoyable band to see in action. The strongest part for me was the wonderful harmonies in the vocals. The lead singer has a great voice and is backed very well by other members of the band. The music is full of hooks that had the audience dancing and singing along, particularly during the choruses of each track. The interplay between the band and the audience was especially obvious on two stand-out cuts from their 2007 release, Costello Music. Flathead and Chelsea Dagger were an absolute joy live and two of the highlights for me during this stellar set.

This is a band that I am willing to bet can dominate an intimate club venue, but possess a big sound that is perfect for a festival setting like Monolith. What a show, I am really grateful I had an opportunity to see these guys live. Check out the Fratellis and definitely go see them when they hit your town!

Cheers,
The Dust Devil
