Lords of Jack at Hollywood Alley, Saturday, April 26
April 17th, 2008 Posted by: Dust Devil
At the advice of a good friend of mine, I checked out on MySpace a band by the name of Lords of Jack. Based out of Los Angeles, this band will be playing a concert at Hollywood Alley Saturday, April 26.
First of all, if you have never been to Hollywood Alley out in Mesa, check out this venue. With so many of the cool venues from 10-20 years ago gone, especially in Tempe, it is nice to see this institution still open and still providing the Valley with good, eclectic music that never sticks to just one genre. This place has a great arcade in the back, fabulous food and some of the coldest drinks in town, a factor that in and of itself is a great reason to go!
Lords of Jack get down to the basics with their stripped down rock and roll. Think back to metal of the eighties. I am not referring to that horrible hair metal travesty that we had to endure back then and not the hyperkinetic hardcore that is popular today. This is classic rock and roll done in a style similar to Guns and Roses. You can hear glimpses of Electric era Cult as well, particularly in the guitar playing. They currently have three songs on their MySpace page. I highly recommend checking them out.
What impressed me is a willingness to play different styles. Lords of Jack can rock out on a song like “Steve McQueen”, but quickly tone things down on a song such as “Precious”. Again, no power ballads here, just classic rock and roll, but not in the seventies arena rock fashion.
Check them out the last Saturday in April at Hollywood Alley. I’ll split a calzone with you (they are enormous!).
